The location tree

The location tree is the hierarchical structure in Ester that represents your organisation, locations, departments or similar. It is the foundation for how sources of risk are placed, how permissions are assigned, and how risk information is aggregated and presented.

The location tree is one of the most central concepts in Ester because:

• Sources of risk are linked to locations in the tree — a source of risk is always placed at one or more locations in the organisation.
• The risk picture aggregates upwards — a location's total risk picture is calculated based on all sources of risk at that location and its underlying locations.
• Permissions follow the tree — a user with access to a location sees data for that location and all sub-locations.

The location tree can look many different ways depending on your organisation. Typical hierarchy levels are:
